Ticks

Why are there ticks- what in the world is a tick good for. I wonder if they are good for anyhting - i shoudl sdo some reserach on that but I relaly do not know where to actually look for something like that I am sure it is somewhere on the internet somewhere but where - I will have to googled it I wuppose.
